Frequently Asked Questions

Biowood wood composite timber frequently asked questions

Wood Plastic Composite (WPC) is a combination of recycled thermoplastic and wood fibres.

The wood is simply ground wood particles, made into “wood flour”.

The plastic is recycled and can come from soft plastic such as shopping bags, milk bottles and drink bottles. These are either HDPE or LDPE or PE plastics.

Biowood use a “hard” PVC plastic which is blended with the wood flour at a precise ratio.

The key difference between Biowood composite decking materials and other WPC manufacturers is the hard PVC plastic used. By using hard PVC we enhance the quality and longevity of our Biowood wood plastic composite.

The advantage our customers have when they choose Biowood is that Biowood is 70% wood powder so can be resanded and resealed multiple times as it is homogenous right through.

Even timber fades. Timber must be maintained every 6-12 months. Biowood being 70% wood powder will still oxidize but in a slower rate.

For decking application, taking into factor the wear and tear is 2-3 years while cladding is 3-5 years with 5% colour reduction.

Biowood is categorised as low maintenance. Like any other WPC and like any timber product, the strong Australian sun will have some effect on it.

The advantage using Biowood being 70% wood powder can be resanded and resealed as it is homogenous right through. Incidentally, the Biowood Weatherwood & Driftwood colour was made to make it look like, well, weathered, faded, naturally sun-kissed wood.

If the Weatherwood colour is not sealed, it will fade, but it won’t be as noticeable as fading on other colours.

An Australian company based in New South Wales has developed a quick drying polyurethane seal (Bioseal & Intergrain-Ultra Deck) for Biowood reconstituted wood composite products for external application uv protective coating.

Bioseal & Intergrain-Ultra Deck is a non-toxic, non-hazardous, water-based product that is uniquely for Biowood products. It cannot be used with other WPC products or on any timber. It will protect the Biowood products from fading when exposed to the sun as much as 3 times longer than normal coating.

For Spotted Gum Colour:
Use Intergrain- Ultra Deck- Natural or Bioseal UV Seal Clear.

For Walnut Colour:
Use Intergrain- Ultra Deck- Natural or Bioseal UV Seal Clear.

For Black Japan Colour:
Use Intergrain- Ultra Deck- Charcoal or Bioseal UV Seal Black.

For Weather Wood Colour
Use Intergrain- Ultra Deck- Weather Wood or Bioseal UV Seal Clear

Biowood Bigboard decking is installed by way of concealed fixings. Please refer to our manual installation guide here.

Please do. Due to our composition of PVC, Biowood is water resistant and proven time tested being applied in marine or pool application in Australia. Biowood has less than 0.05% water absorption.

It is recommended to use a slip-reducing grit mixed into the Biowood wood plastic composite seal (200gms of fine grit to 4lt) to achieve a slip resistance as R11 as per AS/NZS 4586.

This is also one of the main features of our Biowood decking being 70% wood can be resanded, resealed and bring back the slip resistance required. Please check with your local council. You may or may not need to conform to Australian Standard AS/NZS 4586.

It will be pleasantly warm. CSIRO tests reports that the heat release is 1 on a scale of 1-10 where 10 is the highest heat gain material. Again, please don’t take our word for it. Grab some samples from different manufacturers, leave it in the sun during the hottest part of the day for maybe 5-10 minutes then put your bare foot or hand on it. Your experience will be the best test. Dark colours will absorb more heat than light colours.
